Reception teachers are, of course, completely idolised by their children. After all, they clear up sick without heaving or shouting, they play games all the time without ever being too tired, and best of all they never make you go to bed! It’s our perfect opportunity with the most receptive audience we’ll ever have…perhaps that’s why this year is called the Reception year! (I dread to think what Year Six might be called if we worked along those lines!) However, assuming you now have your class hooked on the joys of writing, the fun can really begin. Once the first ten or so letter sounds have been taught, you can begin to show how letters are used to form words and how words are put together to make sentences. These concepts need to be reinforced by looking at ‘published’ sentences and words (books, labels, posters etc as before) as well as by daily modelling of the writing process.

Just as we were getting to grips with the Literacy Strategy, the structure of the hour and the resources needed, the dawning of the Numeracy Strategy began.
So how is the hour structured?
As part of the National Numeracy Strategy daily mathematics lessons are taught. These last for about 45 minutes in Key Stage 1, increasing to 50-60 minute lessons in Key Stage 2. The first 10 minutes of each lesson consists of oral work and mental calculations. They have a brisk pace and lively encouragement for all to take part. Obviously the teacher can differentiate questions to target individuals appropriately. This time can be used to learn and/or consolidate number facts and to discuss mental strategies. The main teaching activity follows for the next 30 to 40 minutes. There is a focus on whole class and direct teaching though will also include group, pair and individual activities. Differentiation by task should be selective. As with the Literacy Hour, the National Numeracy Strategy ends with a 10-15 minute plenary in which learning and outcomes are shared and misconcepts are sorted out.
So what is the National Literacy Strategy? The National Literacy Strategy is an hour a day dedicated to reading and language skills. It takes the form of a highly structured and prescriptive timetable.
In the first 15 minutes, text level work takes place. Children are seated together, often on a carpet area, and discuss a text together. This may be a big book or an enlarged piece of text. Discussion covers such areas as character, plot, text layout and organisation.
In the next 15 minutes there is a sentence or word level focus. It is important that over a term there is a balance of both. It is important that sentence and word level work comes from the text used in the first 15 minutes. Areas raised may be antonyms and synonyms, verbs and plurals. Initial investigation involves the text but further extension can follow, instigated by the teacher.
What sort of homework will my child receive? How can I help them do well? All questions are answered in this article that covers the main types of English homework children do and ways of helping them.
English homework begins in the very first days of schooling when children will be given books to read and/or words to know by sight. As a child moves through school they will probably be given weekly homework that may consist of spellings to learn, and a piece taking one of three forms: a comprehension, cloze procedure or research work. This will be expected over and above daily reading.
